Governors, trustees and local governors need an enhanced DBS check

This must include a barred list check if an individual is in 'regulated activity' – see paragraphs 317 to 330, and pages 66 to 67 of Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) 2025.

They also need a section 128 check

In academy trusts, members, trustees and people with significant control also need a compulsory identity verification check for Companies House

Associate members of:

  • Academies (non-trustee committee members) must have an enhanced DBS check and a section 128 check
  • Maintained schools are not required to have a DBS check

Governance professionals aren't required to have a DBS check, unless they work from a school premises and have an opportunity for regular contact with children. In
