Exit interviews are a great way to find out why staff are leaving. You can then use this information to improve staff retention. Download our template with questions to ask and see further examples of how others conduct their exit interviews.

Download our template exit interview and adapt it to include questions specific to your school's setting. You can use the questions as prompts for an exit interview or give the document to staff as a questionnaire to fill in.

What to consider

There’s no statutory requirement to do exit interviews. If you choose to do them, you should aim to do an exit interview with all staff who are leaving. Whatever you do, aim to be consistent in your approach.
