What is it?

The competency framework for governance outlines the skills, knowledge and behaviours needed for effective governance in both maintained schools and academies. While it isn't directly applicable to pupil referral units (PRUs) and further education colleges, you may still find it a useful guide if you serve in one of these institutions.

The framework is divided into 2 parts:

1. Principles and personal attributes

All those elected or appointed to boards should:

  • Conduct themselves in line with the Nolan principles of public life 
  • Be mindful of their responsibilities under equality legislation, recognising and encouraging diversity and inclusion
  • Understand the impact of effective governance on the quality of education and on outcomes for all children and young people
