Inclusion/equality: role of the link governor
Be clear on your role as the link governor for inclusion/equality and find out what questions you can ask to challenge and support your subject lead.
Inclusion is about making sure everyone has the same opportunities, regardless of their different needs, characteristics and backgrounds.
In your link governor role, you’ll likely be focusing on inclusion in terms of pupils rather than staff. You'll be monitoring whether your school:
- Provides equal access to learning and opportunities
- Creates a welcoming and respectful environment for all pupils
Work closely with the subject lead
This might be your:
- School inclusion officer/lead
- Special educational needs coordinator (SENCO)
Ask your chair if you’re unsure which staff member you need to speak to.
Working closely with the subject lead will help you get the insights you need to help the board hold staff to account and drive improvement.
You’re not expected to be an inclusion expert (that’s your subject lead’s job), but make sure you have a solid understanding of your board’s responsibilities under equalities legislation -
