Set out expectations in your code of conduct and social media policy

Your code of conduct should cover governors' use of social media. If it doesn't, update it to set out:

  • What kind of behaviour is acceptable
  • How governors can avoid bringing the board into disrepute

Although it's not statutory, it's a good idea to have a social media policy, so that:

  • Everyone inside and outside the school knows the expectations and limitations of using social media in both a professional and personal capacity
  • Your school has something to refer parents or pupils to if they try to contact governors or members of staff through social media
  • Sanctions are appropriate and consistent
