Be clear on how you can go about monitoring the catch-up premium for the 2020/21 academic year. Find out what questions to ask to scrutinise your school’s use of the funding, so you’re assured the money is well spent.

Note: this article is aimed at governing boards and boards of trustees. If you’re on a local governing body (LGB) in an academy, check to see if you’ve been delegated responsibility for monitoring the catch-up premium. If you’re the chair and you’re unsure, ask your trust.

What you need to monitor

You need to hold school leaders to account for how they spend the coronavirus catch-up premium this year.

You'll need to scrutinise your school's plans for and use of the catch-up funding and consider whether the school is:

  • Spending the funding in line with its catch-up priorities
  • Being transparent with parents on the use of the funding

You don’t need to reinvent the wheel here. The Department for Education doesn’t specify a particular method of monitoring, so it’s up to your board to decide.
