Benchmarking within the school
The Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL) said to us that as salaries are determined by individual school circumstances, staff salaries should be benchmarked against other similar roles within the school.
They explained that salaries are often determined by school size, with the headteacher's salary set in line with this and then the salaries for other leadership posts worked out subsequently.
ASCL also explained that benchmarking the role against other similar posts in the school will help to ensure fairness for all staff.
They also strongly advised seeking HR advice, as the benchmarking process may have an impact on the school pay policy.
