Need-to-know: School food standards consultation outcome published

The DfE has published the results of its consultation on the School Food Standards. The updated standards will come into effect from September 2027, subject to parliamentary approval.

The government has published its response to the consultation outcome on updating the legislative framework for the School Food Standards. The proposed changes are still subject to parliamentary approval.

Once approved, the updated standards will apply to all state-funded schools in England, including maintained schools, academies and free schools.

What are the planned changes?

Subject to parliamentary approval, the updated school food standards will come into force from September 2027. 

Governance changes

Under the proposals, from September 2027 schools will be expected to:

  • Appoint a lead governor for school food
  • Publish their school food policy and menus online

Operational changes

New breakfast standards – including a list of food and drink that may be served before the school day starts (honey, syrups and chocolate spreads no longer permitted) More fibre – higher-fibre requirements for bread, pasta and rice (e.g. brown/wholemeal varieties) and 1 or more portions of vegetables/salad
