The DfE has updated the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework. The new framework applies from 4 September 2023

There are 2 small changes and 1 clarification, however these changes may help to relieve pressure on your school's staffing budget.

All other ratios and requirements in the framework remain the same.

You don’t need to take any immediate action.

Minimum staff-to-child ratio for 2-year-olds is now 1:5 (rather than 1:4)

This is a minimum requirement.

Childminders can now care for more than the specified maximum of 3 young children

Previously, childminders could care for up to 6 children under the age of 8, but only 3 young children (a child is classed as a young child up until 1st September following their 5th birthday). Under the revised framework, they can care for up to 6 young children if the additional children are:

  • Siblings of the children they already care for
  • Their own children
