The new version of Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) comes into force in September 2022. This follows on from a consultation on the proposed changes, which ended in March 2022.

Make sure all governors and trustees receive appropriate safeguarding and child protection (including online) training at induction

You probably do this already, but KCSIE specifies it needs to:

  • Equip governors with the knowledge to provide strategic challenge so they're assured safeguarding policies/procedures are effective and deliver a robust whole-school approach to safeguarding
  • Be regularly updated

This is explained in paragraph 81.

Make sure staff are aware what filters and monitoring systems are in place, and how to escalate concerns

Make sure your designated safeguarding lead (DSL) has the appropriate authority
