Need-to-know: DfE announces pay award and removes performance-related pay requirement

School teachers and leaders will receive a fully funded 5.5% pay award.

The above-inflation pay increase of 5.5% will apply from 1 September 2024.

Allowance ranges (for teaching and learning responsibility payments and special educational needs allowances) will also increase by 5.5%.

The pay award applies to all maintained schools. Academy trusts can choose to follow it.

The pay award will be funded through a new grant

The core schools budget grant (CSBG) will be paid in autumn term 2024 to:

  • All maintained schools and academies (including special schools)
  • Pupil referral units
  • Alternative provision academies
  • Non-maintained special schools
  • Independent special schools
