The DfE has updated the School Admissions Code in response to its consultation. The most significant changes are around the rules on in-year admissions and fair access protocols (FAPs). If you're the admission authority for your school, get to grips with the amended code before it comes into force on 1 September 2021.

What's happening?

The Department for Education (DfE) has published a new version of the School Admissions Code, in response to its consultation. The new code will come into force on 1 September 2021 (until then, the old code will continue to apply). 

The updated code aims to:

  • Clarify and improve the process for admitting children to school outside of the normal admissions round (i.e. in-year admissions)
  • Provide additional information for admission authorities to support them in discharging their duties effectively

In-year admissions

The DfE has added a new section to the code on in-year admissions that includes the following provisions. Note that there are different dates for the 2021/22 academic year and all subsequent years. 

Local authorities (LAs) must publish information on
